Commodity sourcing, procurement and quality assessing

Overview

Via Charon carries out each stage of the supply chain process to bring down costs and through vertical integration partnerships. These partnerships begin at the early stages of production, often in the field of raw materials at the point of extraction. Such connections grants Via Charon with primary dealer rates which we pass directly onto our customers. We do not mark up our procurement prices, but instead only receive nominal service fees, so wholesale prices are what Via Charon customers receive. Much of Via Charon’s sourcing has been done already and behind the scenes with thousands of partnerships across port terminals, mines, quarries, plantations, farms, industrial plants, Maquiladoras and more. However if a user’s HS commodity code is not in our partnership database we will perform sourcing on their behalf all for not additional cost. That is how much Via Charon trusts its network.

Our quality assessors are an external team that will travel directly to a site of a commodity, product or material in order to assess its quality and will formulate or integrate their verdict  into their own qualitative grading system or one created by the user of our service  if no standardized international system already exists. If we  are procuring for our customer using a partner exporter of goods then we will already have a stationed assessing team who will be ready and available to evaluate almost immediately instead of having our assessing delegation fly out.

It is a critical point that our evaluators are external to the exporting manufacturer or producer because we aim to deliver the most unbiased and transparent assessment that our customers could expect. The commodity code and volume of items to be purchased determines the type of assessment.

For commodities where a universal or regional standardized certification exists the standard for grading and qualifying will be followed precisely by our assessing team. As an example, steel is  quality-checked in accordance with the fabrication, design, installation and safety standards of the product. The ISO or International Organization for Standardization offers technical delivery requirements in the steel industry under the standard ISO 6929. This includes the hardness, tensile strength and impact of the steel.

The ISO provides methods for how this quality assessment should be carried out. Our external quality assessors aim to to work for the satisfaction of our customers, so if you believe testing is required, then if it is plausible, legally safe and contractually agreeable the team will perform quality testing on your behalf. If certifications such as an ISO qualification for a steel company is a pre-requisite for you to purchase from a supplier, then we will ensure the legitimacy of the standard certificate or if you are unsure of whether the national compliance standard that a company has for a product matches your expectations, then our assessors are willing to make industry-based analyses to determine if it complies with international average standards.

Overview

Via Charon manages every stage of the supply chain through vertical integration partnerships, beginning at the earliest stages of production—often directly at raw material extraction. These relationships grant us primary dealer rates, which we pass directly to our customers. We do not mark up procurement prices; instead, we operate on nominal service fees, ensuring our clients receive true wholesale pricing.

Global Partnership Network

Our sourcing infrastructure is already established behind the scenes, with thousands of partnerships across port terminals, mines, quarries, plantations, farms, industrial plants, and maquiladoras worldwide. If a customer’s HS commodity code is not yet within our partnership database, Via Charon will source it on their behalf at no additional cost—demonstrating our confidence in the strength and reach of our network.

Independent On-Site Quality Assessment

Via Charon works with an external team of quality assessors who travel directly to the site of a commodity, product, or material to evaluate quality firsthand. Their assessments are integrated into a standardized international grading system where one exists, or into a bespoke grading framework created by the customer if required. For partner exporters, stationed assessors are often already on-site, allowing for immediate evaluation without deployment delays.

Standards, Certification & Compliance

To ensure unbiased and transparent results, all evaluators operate independently from manufacturers and producers. Where universal or regional standards exist, such as ISO 6929 for steel, assessments strictly follow prescribed criteria including hardness, tensile strength, and impact resistance. Our assessors can verify certification legitimacy, perform quality testing when legally and contractually permissible, and conduct industry-based analyses to confirm whether national compliance standards meet international average expectations.
